It’s been a while, so we thought we’d post an update! Since May we have been looking for suitable land for sale in the Peak District. We did put an offer in on a site, but were sadly unsuccessful. Now we’re stepping it up a gear by actively contacting land owners and managers to see if anyone would be open to an offer! We are in contact with local officers from the National Trust, and with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, and we’re hoping to talk to the RSPB too. It feels really great to chat to folk who are already doing things on the ground, and it should stand us in good stead beyond the purchase itself, as we join a network of regional nature recovery that is greater than the sum of its parts.
In the meantime, I (Vashti) have started a part-time Masters in Ecological Restoration. This is a really exciting practical course, which complements my ecology degree (which was more theory-heavy) and my experience in statutory conservation and monitoring. I can already see all the ways I can put these new skills and knowledge to good use for Wild•Ling, and it heightens the anticipation of getting to do it for real.
Thanks to everyone who is still following us, supporting us, and rooting for us, especially to those who have set up a regular donation through the Crowdfunder. We are so looking forward to putting it to good use as soon as we find the right piece of land. And if anyone knows of any land owners on the western edge of the Peaks who might be interested in selling a bit of land, please let us know!
